About the Project

Background

The OneOak project has been developed by the Sylva Foundation to help promote the importance of trees and woodland management, and the benefits of using wood. It is our main education project. We also support Forest School. Sylva's wider work includes forestry science with our think-tank Forestry Horizons, and practical work to support sustainable forest management in the UK and beyond through myForest.

Why we are supporting this project

Sustainable forest management is quite a complex story and is not widely understood by the public. We believe that by focussing on one tree, this will allow us to bring the story alive by demonstrating the real-life benefits of managing trees and of using wood. We will celebrate the tree’s life, both as a living organism, and in what it provides for man and the environment after it is felled.

Trees & Forestry

What is sustainable forest management? Is it true that the UK is the second least wooded country in Europe? Is it a good thing to manage woodlands?

Activities

The woodland and the tree will be visited by school children and scientists to record its history, environment and carbon content. The OneOak tree was felled early in 2010, in an event attended by partners, school children and the media.

The tree was converted to timber and is being used by a wide variety of end-users over a period of some two years. These outputs form part of the story, as will key messages such as following the embodied carbon, and the cycle of life with the planting of a new generation of oak trees.

Partners

We are working with a large number of partners and supporters. They have all very generously donated their time and resources to supporting us.
